Hard as it is to imagine at times, there is a market for all types of deviancy, no matter how small a niche it is. Merely being offensive in its subject matter is not sufficient.Or arguably just as bad for some companies, a presentation (most commonly at E3) intended to wow audiences instead goes horribly awry, damaging a company's reputation or a certain type of brand in the process. In some cases, even the consoles are better off sacrificed to your trash compactor. Your internet and cell phone aren't even safe. Game mods and homebrew creations exist that can put the worst fanfic in perspective.
